focus on you

The onset of a new year is a great time to pause, reflect, and plan. Reflect on the path you’ve taken to get where you are. Give thought to the past crazy year and all you accomplished in spite of it. Look forward to the coming year and consider how you want to spend your time, energy, and focus.

To help with this and perhaps provide some friendly motivation, at storytelling with data we’ve created a number of activities that focus on you this month:

  • The January SWD challenge is to visualize your resume. Give your curriculum vitae a refresh, incorporating visual components as you see fit.

  • In the latest podcast episode, hi, my name is…, I share example introductions from the team and a robust process you can use to craft your own inspiring professional introduction.

  • You can see the self-introduction creating process I outline in the podcast written out in our latest SWD community exercise, craft your intro.

  • In our next live event on January 26th, become a data viz superstar, I’ll talk through strategies to help establish yourself as a go-to resource or internal expert, or guide your team to do so. (Open to premium members of the SWD community.)

One topic I’ll touch on in the live event is the importance of setting good goals. Here at storytelling with data, we’ve just graded last quarter’s Objectives & Key Results (OKRs) and set new ones for this quarter (listen to the podcast episode, goals like Google, for more on the process we follow). This keeps us on track and accountable to think beyond the day to day and make progress on big things to help drive our mission forward.

What goals will you set for yourself? Consider how you can use the SWD community as part of your process. You might aspire to complete every monthly challenge in 2021 (3 dedicated individuals accomplished this in 2020: Charles Saulnier, Pris Lam, and Simon Rowe—awesome job, folks!). Or a regular cadence of exercise completion would help with targeted skill development. Let us know your goals in your SWD community profile (not yet a member? join now!).

Here’s to a fantastic 2021!
