storytelling with YOU
Have you heard that three is a magic number? Those who grew up in the 70s and 80s likely now have a catchy melody going through their heads. This educational tune was introduced in the very first Schoolhouse Rock—a Saturday morning cartoon staple in many homes, including mine.
Outside of this nostalgia, I’ve always loved the number three. My birthday is on the third day of the month. I wore the #3 jersey on the soccer field in high school. I have three beautiful children. And now…
I’ve written three books!
I’m thrilled to introduce storytelling with you: plan, create, and deliver a stellar presentation. (Keep reading to access exclusive early content!) I wanted to write this book for quite some time. I originally sketched out the contents and drafted the introduction in early 2018, working from a London cafe on a free day between workshops. I shelved it shortly after that, deciding instead to concentrate my effort on another book (Let’s Practice!). I was just getting back into a rhythm with it when the global pandemic hit, and I wondered to myself whether people would ever convene and present in person again. When signs finally started pointing toward yes, I dusted it off one more time and have been working feverishly ever since.
It has been very interesting for me to observe over the years—with all of our focus on communicating visually with data—how important the individual is when it comes to whether or not an overall communication is successful. Someone can have a beautiful graph (or slide, or anything), but if they can’t talk through it in a way that gets others’ attention and engages them, then all that hard work runs the risk of being for naught. I want to prevent that from happening by sharing what I’ve learned about how to communicate in a manner that makes people want to listen and act. In the same way that I became skilled at visualizing data—by learning through every instance, iterating, and then teaching others how to do it—refining my own presentation skills has followed that same deliberate method.
storytelling with you was written for a broader audience (beyond communicating with data specifically), focusing on the role that the individual plays when communicating and presenting in various settings. From a board meeting to a business pitch to a keynote presentation, storytelling with you takes the reader through my process of planning, creating, and delivering content that drives positive outcomes. I’ve worked to make it widely applicable and accessible, highlighting my own transformation from an unseasoned introvert to a poised and confident speaker. If I can do it—and teach my team and clients how—I firmly believe that anyone can.
If this sounds intriguing or you simply like the work we do at storytelling with data, I would love to have you show your support by doing the following:
